Courtside Wisdomby John Wooden
with Paul Schwarz • Be true to yourself. My father said, “Son, try to live up to these.” He also gave me a $2 bill and told me that as long as I kept it, I’d never be broke. Now $2 may not sound like very much, but to my dad, who didn’t have much at all, it was quite a bit. I kept that bill and eventually gave it to my own son. Like my father influenced me, athletes influence others. Right or wrong, they are in the public eye, and have an opportunity to set an example for others, especially our youth. Organizations like Athletes in Action, the sports division of Campus Crusade for Christ, perform a valuable service by bringing out the second part of Jesus’ Great Commandment to love your neighbor as yourself. The more we teach people to put others before themselves, the more effect we have in serving a better society. I first became associated with AIA in the 1970s, shortly after I retired from coaching basketball at UCLA. The AIA basketball team televised some of their games, and I helped provide commentary for the broadcasts. Later I became involved with AIA in other ways. Being associated with an organization like AIA gives me a certain peace within myself. In one way or another, all of us are seeking success in life. I define success as peace of mind, a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming, and not just physically. As Scripture says, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). There is only one kind of life that truly wins—the one that places faith in the hands of the Savior. John Wooden is one of only two men inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame as both a coach and a player. Coach Wooden is the title presenter of the Keys to Life Award at the annual Legends of the Hardwood evangelistic breakfast co-sponsored by AIA.
